11051

Yellow streak that is possibly from atherosclerosis

11054

Atherosclerosis

  • The top cut is abdominal because it shows no intercostal branches
  • The bottom cut is thoracic because of the intercostals.

06515

Coronary atherosclerosis

  • This is a vonGiesen stain for elastic fibers.
  • The LAD is usually the first occluded coronary artery.

03470

Atherosclerosis

  • Open spaces are from cholesterol
  • An artery that is more then 75% occluded is liable to suffer an infarct.
  • Cells lay down fibers of ECM during atherosclerosis.

09440

This is a dilated pontine artery.

  • Normally it is straight but it acquires the S-shape curve because it has lost it’s elasticity.
  • Cholesterol is deposited but when CT fibers and ECM are laid down it becomes irreversible.

08738

Monckeberg’s arteriosclerosis or medial calcific sclerosis.

  • Samples shows a ring like calcification without inflammatory reaction.

11672

Lung arteriole

  • Occlusion of the alveolar arteriole.  When arterioles become included this is bad because it leads to loss of B.P. regulation.  It is the arterioles that constrict/dilate to regulate B.P.
  • This shows dilation of the media signifying primary pulmonary hypertension.  It is untreatable.  Secondary would be related to congestion from left heart failure.

00062

Essential hypertension from renal atherosclerosis.

  • Goldblat hypertension can be seen by clamping a renal artery.  If you later release it and you will see a B.P soar.

22019

Fundoscopy showing essential hypertension.

22796

Fundoscopy showing renal hemmorhage.  Probably caused by hypertention.

24779

Petechial hemorrhages from renal arteritis.

22096

Temporal arteritis showing the optic nerve and how easily it can become involved.

29655

Kawasakis syndrome is an arteritis of the coronary arteries in children.  It is self limiting.

  • Note the skin rash.

13045

Hemangioma

21066

Angiosarcoma/hemangiosarcoma of the breast.  This is the most common tumor in humans.
